I want to start with the fact that I DID call the office prior to writing this review. I tried to resolve this with them directly, but they flatly refused to refund any part of the disputed charge explained below.

I am saddened to write this review. I was a happy and loyal client of this relatively new practice and Dr. Fedor treated me and my husband for over 5 years (as a reference, we are millennials renting a home in Serra Mesa).

Recently, she hired a ton of new dentists and therefore, the entire practice has changed, the vibe has shifted. Most notably, the quality of the work and the frequency of up-charges. The following experience was NOT with Dr. Fedor, but with Dr. Canoza.

I have employer HMO dental insurance and up until recently, I haven't had any sticker shock, but was really shocked to have received a single quote for $1005.00 OVER what my insurance covered for a crown. I was not offered any other options and was led to believe this was the only option I had since I had cracked a large hole in my tooth. I trusted them because I had been going here for years and they’d never tried to overcharge me before. I could barely afford this $1005 bill but luckily had qualified to pay via CareCredit, then went on my way.

HOWEVER - Weeks later it was still bothering me, the fact I had to suddenly pay so much considering years of good service and no issues with billing previously. Something seemed off. I checked billing codes from the bill I received vs my dental coverage and found that the costs that my insurance company had received as claims were way less than what I saw on my bill from the dentist that was submitted to me.

I called DeltaDentalUSA support to find out they never saw any documentation from the dental office regarding the actual costs, which is why DeltaDental's claims showed I owed little to nothing on their end. This is because the dental office did NOT submit pre-determination information prior to giving me a quote. The insurance provider assured me pre-determination is a stipulation in my HMO insurance plan so that the dental office has to provide me with alternative choices that would be covered under my plan (i.e. informed consent). Think of it as your primary care physician prescribing you a branded medication vs a generic medication, in essence, to make more money.

I found out that my HMO insurance actually only covers metal crowns for this far-back lower molar in particular, not the in-office, 3D printed ceramic crown they sold me that cost $1005 extra. They knew that the entire time and failed to inform me of my options which is my patient right.

When I mentioned how unethical this was that I was not provided covered alternatives, the front desk woman told me in so many words, "well we don't offer metal crowns at all, and frankly those aren't as good as ceramic crowns and I think it would be more unethical for the Dr. to put in a crown they don't believe is good for you." That is, first and foremost, not a linear comparison in thinking, and secondly, my provider does not have the authority to perform services on me without fully informed consent, regardless of how the dentist FEELS about the quality of metal crowns, at the end of the day, it's not their call, it's mine.

In the end, I asked for a refund for the $1005 they overcharged me, and she said no because the work had been done, the usual defiance. So now I am moving forward with a grievance claim from my dental insurer to open an investigation on this shady dealing.

It's sad, truly, because I really loved Dr. Fedor, a fellow millennial business owner, but her growth of this practice has been detrimental to the overall service provided. My suggestion would be to cut back on overhead costs like fancy new tech and go back to providing affordable quality dental care.

I pondered writing this review. My first visit was great there. My second a few years later was terrible Grace Fedor did my cleaning and it was the most painful experience I've had at the dentist. She had no bedside manner and was super aggressive. It hurt for weeks after and at certain parts of my mouth where she scrapped the gum back and kept scraping under, it still hurt. I tried to schedule a recheck later through their website and followed up with email and heard nothing back. After the cleaning my teeth have been sensitive ever since. DO NOT RECOMMEND FEDOR.

I moved into town recently and needed to find a new office. A friend referred me here. I had my X-rays done and general check-up with Dr. Arielle Canoza. Checking in was easy and quick. I'm excited to have a friendly office to support my oral health!

Terrible practice! They over charged me by $1,300! My services totaled $1,645 and should have only been $300 with my insurance. I knew this and questioned it multiple times but they still made me pay. I called my insurance and filed a grievance, sure enough, the dentist owes me $1,345. I’m absolutely appalled by how they do business. I also waited hours for my services and was there for over 4 hours for a root canal and crown. Don’t recommend!

Dr. Lin and his assistant are a perfect team.
I thought expensive even though I have insurance. I prefer the previous front desk staff but I do love Dr. Fedor and trust her.

I wasn’t planning on writing a review but I wanted to warn others. I went in march for x-rays and a “cleaning” I arrived early to my appointment. didn’t wait too long until I was called to do x-rays, those went quickly and pretty normal. After waiting in a room for a while I was seen by Dr Arielle Canoza. She seemed pretty nice but when they went over billing before starting anything, the charges were INSANE. She said I had gum disease and wanted to do laser treatments. They wanted to do a more “deep” clean and wrack up the charges. overall with everything they wanted to do it was a little over 10k in charges on the paper they gave me and 2k out of pocket. I told them I didn’t want anything fancy other than the regular cleaning that my insurance FULLY covers. Once I made that very clear the demeanor changed and I was told if I wanted a cleaning I would have to wait until after lunch break or reschedule. I had spent over 2 hours in that office so I was completely over it at that point and left. I also wanted a second opinion before having anything done because I have never experienced a dentist visit where they made my mouth seem like it was practically rotting. Well today I went to “serra mesa smiles” and surprise surprise my gums were FINE. needed some fillings but everything I’m having done at serra mesa smiles is only going to cost me $200 out of pocket vs. the 10k bill this office built up. they were very nice and FAST at serra mesa smiles! I also wanted to add that when I was waiting to be seen at serra mesa modern a women was checking out and went to pay her bill she seemed shocked by the total and the manager kept telling her “nope that’s the total I gave you before we did the work” based on other comments it seems like they tell you a total before double checking with insurance coverages and the bill ends up being more!
